Yoshiko Shapiro
February 14, 1928 - December 6, 2016

Yoshiko Shapiro age 88, of Roswell, died Tuesday, December 6, 2016 after a brief illness.

Yoshiko was born in Japan where she met her husband, Gerald Shapiro.  They came to the United States and lived in San Mateo, California before moving to Roswell.  It is written "we are but a mist that appears for a while and then disappears."  Her indomitable spirit will be indelibly written in our hearts.  Her strong-willed independence was reflected in many ways throughout her life.  She mastered the art of the cathedral pattern quilt in an awe-inspiring way and left those she loved with precious heirloom quilts.  She never forgot a kindness and was truly appreciative.  She was compassionate, humble, and loving.  She proved our worth is not in fame, beauty, words, intention, or possessions... but in deeds from love.

Yoshiko is survived by her nieces Susan Kahn and Abbey Lorber and grandnieces Mimi Sommer and Deborah Lorber.  She was preceded in death by her husband.

Her family is grateful to her devoted friends, Yaeko Campbell and Debora Vigil and all of you in Roswell who were so attentive and helpful to our aunt.

Webmaster's Note: I had the privilege and honor to have known Yoshiko when I bowled with and against her at the Town And Country Bowling Center in Roswell, NM.  She was a very fun person and I loved to pick on her and she would pick right back.  She always gave me some of her delicious home grown seedless cucumbers every week during the growing season and would meticulously remove the shells from her pecans and give bags of them to me and my wife.  Although I hadn't seen Yoshiko since I played Santa at the seniors bowling Christmas party in 2011, I, most often, thought of her and her closest friend Yaeko often.
