Stanley Gortych -- June 20, 1917 - Mar. 20, 2007

 

Stanley Gortych, a longtime Roswell Resident, passed away on Tuesday, March 20, at the Covenant Heart Center in Lubbock, Texas.

He is survived by a brother Frank in Fort Myers, Florida, and a sister Florence of Hartford, CT. He is also survived by a step-son Bern Green of Colorado, a dear friend Idamaye Sanders, a grand-daughter and many friends.  He was born June 20, 1917, in Hartford, Connecticut. His father was Felix Gortych and his mother was Francesca Gallas. Stanley joined the Marines at the beginning of WWII, served in the South Pacific, and was honorably discharged after 4 years. Roswell BPOE Elks Lodge member for over 20 years. By trade, Stanley was a tool and die maker and worked for Atomic Energy in Denver, Colorado. Later he worked for Coors Ceramics for 15 years until he retired.

He came to Roswell in 1981, and during his retirement he was involved in such activities as golf, fishing and bowling. He once won a national gold medal (Senior Olympics) for bowling. He helped organize the Neighborhood Watch Program in Roswell. He was an active member of the Assumption Catholic Church. A funeral Mass will be celebrated for Stanley Gortych on Monday, March 25, 2007, at 9:00 a.m.
