Fred Gerlich -- March 4, 1952 - March 4, 2006

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, March 9 for Fred Gerlich, 54 of Roswell, who died Saturday, March 4, 2006, in Roswell after a short illness. Record Editor Mike Bush will officiate.

A reception will be held in Fellowship Hall of the church immediately after the service.

Gerlich was born March 4, 1952, in Cleveland Ohio. He married his wife, June, on May 12, 2001 in Twinsburg, Ohio.

Survivors include his wife, June Gerlich, and stepdaughter, Chynna Santiago, of the home; a daughter, Melissa Gerlich of Canton, Ohio; three brothers, John Gerlich of Northfield, Ohio, Dennis Gerlich of Parma, Ohio, and Greg Gerlich of Arizona; and one sister, Mary Gerlich of Cleveland.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick Gerlich Sr. and Rita Gerlich.

Gerlich had been sports editor for the Roswell Daily Record since October 2005.  He graduated from the University of Ohio and spent most of his journalism career in news and sports reporting and editing at newspapers in Ohio and Iowa.

The only Sports Editor I knew who considers bowling a sport.  Fred put our bowling results in the paper for a period of about 6 months before his passing. -- George Lee
